Qigong

Qigong (Chi Gung) combines specific postures and movements with special breathing techniques and visualization, to improve the immune system and minimize the effects of ageing. Movements are performed slowly, require minimum space and strength, and can be easily modified to suit individuals with disabilities.

Qi (pronounced Chee) is the Chinese word for life force or energy and gong means exercise or work, so, translated, Qigong means “energy exercise.” Practicing Qigong improves balance and strength, whilst increasing quality, quantity and movement of Qi. The easy low impact postures, and calm, deep breathing with gentle movements creates energy, better balance, flexibility and relaxation to relieve stress.

Classes consist of a gentle warm-up, followed by a selection of Wei Dan (external) and Nei Dan (internal) exercise, to teach the student how to cultivate and store energy at the Lower Dantien (area found below the navel). There are partner exercises to help understand and feel how Qi can be passed through the palms of the hands, and how Qi can be moved to different parts of the body, to increase strength in specific areas. This class is ideal for the beginner or the more advanced student, looking to improve their health, strength and vitality, and is the perfect compliment to energy therapies such as Reiki, Shiatsu and Acupuncture etc.

There are courses available that teach different aspects of Qigong, from simple self-healing exercises, to a complete medical system (part of Traditional Chinese Medicine), which is still used in China today.
